Adidas Ultra Boost 22 R3599

In 2021 focus was on the record-breaking adidas road shoes – like the adidas adizero adios Pro 2 – being put to work by speedsters all over the globe. But with the recent release of the Ultra Boost 22 the brand has updated an already successful model with a new colourway and added a women’s-specific version. The Ultra Boost 22 is a thoroughly modern long run shoe with oodles of bounce and comfort designed for the distance runner.

Under Armour HOVR Machina 2 R3299

After the 2020 launch of the first Machina a little less rigidity in the second version has been welcomed. The Machina 2 still has a HOVR midsole, but this version has been somewhat softened with a Pebax propulsion plate to complement the slightly softer midsole. Those familiar with Rush apparel from Under Armour will be delighted to see that the Machina 2 has taken this high-quality fabric technology and added it as a lining. This mineral-infused lining absorbs energy emitted by your body and reflects it back, improving endurance.

Asics Gel Kayano 28 R3299

The Kayano has been a part of the Asics lineup for decades, and it remains one of the company’s most popular shoes. Designed for neutral runners and overpronators, the Kayano 28 is upgraded with FlyteFoam Blast cushioning for a smooth, responsive ride and a new low-profile heel cup for added support. Gel pods under the heel and forefoot create additional shock absorption, and the dual-density midsole and medial plate work together to counter overpronation.

Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 38 R1799

Last year, the Pegasus’s midsole switched from older cushion foam to more-responsive React, and Nike added two more millimetres of it under the foot. Still not as light and bouncy as ZoomX, React feels medium soft, and moderately flexible. Nike also lowered the pressure in the air unit in the women’s model (15 PSI, compared to 20 PSI for men) to make it a touch softer, doubled the size of the forefoot unit for extra pop on toe-off and scrapped the air unit from the midfoot and heel. The outsole got a facelift, too, with more flex grooves and a rectangular tread pattern that slightly improves grip for short stints offroad.

New Balance 1080 Fresh Foam V11 R3099

Supremely soft but without the mushy feel of other maximalist shoes, the New Balance 1080 is a great pick for runners looking for something plush. The v10 was a major update, and the changes on the v11 are relatively minor in comparison: A revised upper offers a more forgiving fit, especially for wider feet. The Fresh Foam midsole is tuned for soft cushioning but offers a lively feel that doesn’t sacrifice energy return.
