Steyn 11th at NYC Marathon, Qualifies for Olympics

Gerda Steyn qualifies for 2020 Olympics in Tokyo with a PB in the Big Apple.



2019 Comrades winner Gerda Steyn finished 11th at Sunday’s New York City Marathon. Her finishing time of 2:27:48 is not only a personal best, but is also comfortably inside the Olympic qualifying time of 2:29:30.

Earlier this year, Steyn was the first lady in history to run the Comrades Up Run in under six hours,  winning the 86.83km race in an incredible time of 05:58:53.

After Sunday’s race, Steyn posted the following on her Instagram account, “So grateful for all your support from training to lining up for the World’s GREATEST Marathon!! Thanks for all the messages and for supporting this crazy running journey of mine!!! There’s more to come and today’s race was just fuel to the fire. I am determined to go faster in the future and I promise you that I will keep workinnnn until these legs can work no more!!!”

Kenyans Geoffrey Kamworor and Joyciline Jepkosgei took the victories in 2:08:13 and 2:22:38 respectively. According to www.nyrr.org, Kamworor won for the second time in New York, following up on his 2017 victory, while Jepkosgei showed impressive poise in her long-awaited debut at the marathon distance.
