2024 Comrades Marathon Direction Confirmed
It is confirmed! Next year’s Comrades Marathon will be an Up Run.
The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) Board has confirmed that the 97th edition of the world’s biggest, oldest and most famous ultramarathon will start in the coastal city of Durban and finish in the inland city of Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, 9 June 2024.
CMA Chairperson, Mqondisi Ngcobo confirmed the news after Wednesday’s Board meeting.
“Runners have been awaiting confirmation of the direction of next year’s race and we are pleased to announce that the 2024 Comrades Marathon will finish in the City of Choice, Pietermaritzburg,” he said.
The last Comrades Up Run took place in 2019 prior to two consecutive editions being cancelled due to Covid-19. Since then, both the 2022 and 2023 editions were Down Runs which brought the Up and Down Comrades on par with the race’s tradition of hosting a Down Run in odd years and an Up Run in even years.
CMA Race Director Rowyn James says: “We are currently looking at suitable finish venues and will confirm further details at our official race launch later this year.”
The 97th Comrades Marathon will be run on Sunday, 9 June 2024, starting in Durban at 05h30 and ending 12 hours later in Pietermaritzburg.
