Get off the beaten track and find your own adventure with Nike’s latest range of trail shoes designed to help you explore and experience the freedom of running away from the hustle and bustle.

This is exactly what happened as part of Nike’s Open Season campaign when a group of 50 runners took to the trails of the Buitenverwachting wine estate in Cape Town recently to test the latest range of Nike trail shoes in their natural environment.

On a near-perfect day, the runners got to test out two of the shoes in the range – the ZoomX Zegama and the Pegasus Trail 4 – on a varied trail with plenty of loose gravel and some testing hills and descents.

The Zegama is designed for speed. Period. With its ZoomX midfoot cushioning the Zegama is an agile, lightweight and grippy trail shoe designed for short to medium runs on smooth to medium technical trails.

Named after one of the most legendary trail races in the world held near the town of Zegama in Spain, the Nike ZoomX Zegama takes some of the technology used in their road super shoes and mixes it with essential trail technology. For instance, the Zegama includes ZoomX – the same energy-returning foam used in the Nike road super shoes like the Alphafly and Vaporfly.

Put them on and, as soon as you make your first step, the plushness of the shoe is immediately evident. With a wide toebox and increased stack heights, the shoe is comfortable and inspires confidence, particularly on the dry, dusty trails we tested them on.

More specifically, the Zegama has a protective skin over the front of the foot while the ankle gaiter helps limit pesky trail debris from getting into the shoe box. The heel-to-toe drop of 4mm is also on the lowish side making the shoe more stable on loose terrain.

The shoe is ideal for those long trail days and could easily be used when doing a combination of road and trail. It’s light weight and bouncy feel makes you feel fast while the grip is confidence-boosting on both climbs and loose descents.
