Hoka’s Mafate has gone for a radical overhaul in announcing the release of its fifth iteration.  Although still ideally designed for rugged protection and long-distance comfort, Hoka has blended even more robust cushioning with enhanced protection designed to take on the gnarliest terrains.

Hoka has dropped the Speed from the name (the previous edition was called the Mafate 4 Speed), has increased the heel-to-toe drop from 4 to 8mm and has vastly increased stack height from 33 to 45mm with a new double-density midsole foam in a shoe that was last updated in 2022.

The addition of the Rocker Integrity Technology – a rocker-shaped plastic TPU plate inside the midsole – enhances energy return and makes for a confidence-boosting and planted ride.

What’s new?

  • Rocker Integrity Technology: This all-new bottom unit incorporates Hoka’s signature Rocker Integrity Technology, offering smoother transitions and keeping your stride steady over unpredictable, uneven ground.
  • Protective New Upper: Engineered with a fresh upper design, the Mafate 5 keeps trail debris out while maintaining breathability and comfort. The added structure also enhances foot lockdown, which enhances confidence on rocky trails.
  • Optional Gaiter Integration: The Mafate 5 features optional gaiter compatibility for extra protection from dirt, rocks, and debris – ideal for technical trails where the terrain can change at any moment.
  • Best for Technical Trail and Distance: With an aggressive outsole, coupled with the additional cushioning, this is a great all-around trail shoe designed for long distances and challenging terrain.

What Hoka Flyers have to say:

Solid upgrade from the Mafate Speed 4. Super cushioned but still surprisingly responsive, with proper grip. The upper seems more breathable, and although I haven’t done a proper run in wet terrain, it looks like it’ll drain well. Fits snug in the midfoot with a roomy toe box. It looks like a bulky shoe, but it still performs well on technical terrain and is surprisingly lightweight. I’d rate this one as a favourite for race days from my running shoe collection.” – Jacques Buys

“A great all-round shoe that can be used for long training days and racing. The Mafate feels soft yet durable on all types of trails.” – Maryke van Zyl
