Bootie bits

When it comes to lightweight running shoes with thin, tight-fitting uppers, it’s often the case that comfort isn’t the primary goal; however, this pair features an inner bootie, which locks down the midfoot underneath the laces. It’s made of lightweight, stretchy mesh. We advise giving the tongue of the bootie a good tug once your foot is all the way in, which will smooth out the kinks and ensure the inner is in an optimal position.

First Impressions

It’s remarkable how similar this shoe is to the Salomon S-Lab Sense in look, style, and even weight. Once you slip your foot in, you can tell the difference; but like the Sense, the Summit V2 still delivers on performance. Unlike the Sense, the NB comes in comfortably under R2 000.

Mud dropper

The outsole is made of New Balance’s hydrohesion rubber, which is supposed to be sticky when wet and grippy in dry conditions. Testers did experience good traction on sandy rocks and slippery roots – as with all trail-running shoes. But that’s all relative: the grip on your shoe can only take you so far, because technical skills and a strong core are also required to help you stay upright on the trails.

Deep 4mm lugs drop mud effectively, which prevents the shoes from becoming caked up.

Rev it up

The lightweight, streamlined construction not only handles a variety of terrain; it makes for a zippy ride. The midsole – which is made of NB Revlite Foam – offers ample cushioning, for a trail-running shoe. Though if it wasn’t for the protective three-quarter-length rockplate, it would probably be too soft.

Fantom finish

Two materials have been bonded together to create the Fantom Fit upper, one of which is an outer layer responsible for protecting the foot. The upper covers most of the sides, top and toes, and can stand up to harsh African veld and fynbos.
