SOWETO MARATHON: All You Need To Know

Make the most out of the Soweto Marathon! Here is everything you need to know to smash your best race.

Event details:

Date: 3 November 2019
Venue: Start & Finish: Stadium Avenue, FNB Stadium, Nasrec, JHB.
Start times: The standard marathon (42.2km): 05h30; The half marathon (21.1km): 06.30; 10km run: 07h00. (If you are not in your designated starting pen by the time the gun goes off, you will not be able to run)

Expo:

Race pack collection takes place from 31 October-2 November 2019
Thurs – Fri 10:00 – 20:30 / Sat 8:30 – 20:30
FNB Stadium, Gate D, Johannesburg, South Africa

You will nned to take the following with you:

  • ID, Driver’s License or Passport
  • Your ChampionChip
  • Confirmation of registration email
  • Student Card or Letter from School (if applicable)
  • If you are under 18, bring the indemnity form that has been signed by your parent or guardian.

Someone can collect your race pack for you but they will need a letter of authorisation from you as well as all of the above.

What to bring on race day:

1. Race numbers

Race numbers must be worn throughout the race on the front of your upper garment/vest and the 2019 provincial license number must be worn on the front & back of your upper body garment or issued temporary licence number must be worn on the back of your upper body garment. Registered athlete(s) must be a member of a club affiliated with ASA and must wear their club colours along with their 2019 license number, which are to be worn on the back and front together with the issued race number. The official race number must not cover the ASA sponsor on the provincial licence.

2. Timing Device

Please remember to wear your ChampionChip timing device on Race Day and this must be attached to your running shoe. Timing mats will be placed at various points on route. Timing is mat to mat.

Where to park:

Parking will be provided at FNB Stadium. Note that parking is at your own risk. The Soweto Marathon may not be held responsible for theft or damage to any vehicle and its contents.

Hydration stations are located every 3 kilometres.

  • Kliptown
  • Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital
  • Vilakazi Street
  • Hector Peterson Memorial
  • Morris Isaacson School
  • Oppenheimer Memorial
  • Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s current home
  • Jabulani Hostels
