What’s On: May Race Calendar
May is a sweet spot on the running calendar – cooler mornings, calmer winds, and plenty of opportunities to put your training to the test. Whether you’re chasing a PB, building towards a bigger goal, or just looking to soak up the race-day vibe, this month offers something for everyone.
From fast road races to scenic trail adventures, here’s your guide to the events worth lining up for.
1 May – Miway Wally Hayward Marathon, Half, 10km, 4.2km fun run – Centurion Rugby Club, Pretoria: One of the oldest and most popular marathons in South Africa, the Wally was first run in 1977, in honour of one of South Africa’s most famous runners. With multiple distances on offer, there’s no excuse not to bring the whole family along. The marathon is a traditional Comrades qualifier, and a good test of fitness ahead of the Big C if that’s what you’re after.
1 May – Rhodes Quality Half Marathon, 10km, 5km Fun Run, 20.5km Trail, 14.5km Trail – Wellington, Western Cape: Previously known as the Safari Half, but now with a new sponsor, this is one of the most popular races of the year in the Western Cape. With a big field, the start-line vibe is legendary, while the course features some steep climbs to ensure a proper test. All pre-entrants will receive an RFG Foods product gift pack.
Editor’s Choice: Firmly entrenched as one of SA’s top trail-running events, the MUT is a celebration of everything good about trail running.
3 May – Durban International Marathon, 21km, 10km – Durban: This race is one of the oldest and most prestigious marathons on the African continent, known for its challenging course, scenic route, and festive atmosphere. It attracts runners from all over the world, including elite athletes, amateur runners and first-time marathoners. The marathon course takes runners through the streets of Durban, along the scenic Golden Mile beachfront, and through various neighbourhoods and landmarks.
1-18 May – Oxpecker Trail Run and Oxpecker Trail Marathon – Winterton, KZN: Run around the historic Spioenkop Mountain and along the banks of the powerful Tugela River, all with a view of the Drakensberg. It’s a weekend of memorable trails, stiff-legged jols and an electric atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else. Whether you’re here to chase a PB, soak up the Drakensberg views, or just have an excuse to get out of town, you’re in the right place. Pick your weekend – Yellow-billed, Red-billed, African or Marathon – and get ready for two epic days of running, glamping, and memories that will last longer than your stiff legs.

23-24 May – Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, 10km and Trail Runs – Cape Town: After the disappointment of a wind-enforced cancellation in 2025, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon hopes to finally prove itself worthy of World Major selection this year. The cancellation delayed the announcement we all expected, meaning the race will probably only receive Major status for 2027. But the event has still come a long way since it was revamped in 2017. Top-class organisation and investment have turned the race into one of the Big Three, along with the Comrades and Two Oceans.

29-31 May – MUT by UTMB 100-Miler, 100km, 60km, 44km, 20km, 11km – George: Firmly entrenched as one of SA’s top trail-running events, the MUT is a celebration of everything good about trail running. The routes are simply majestic, the views inspiring, and the level of organisation is the very highest.
The start line is waiting, and so is everything you’ve been working for. Trust your training, run your race, and don’t be afraid to dig deep when it counts. Whether it’s a PB, a strong finish, or simply showing up, get out there and make it yours. Happy May!
