October’s Best Runs: Our Picks of the Month

October is calling, and there’s plenty of running to answer it.

Spring is in full swing, the days are getting longer, and South Africa’s race calendar is heating up. From scenic trail adventures and tough mountain challenges to fast road races and big-city events, October has something for every kind of runner.

The Runner’s World team has picked our favourite events happening around the country this month. Whether you’re chasing a PB, looking for a new trail to explore, or want a good excuse to lace up and hit the start line. Here are the races we think deserve a spot on your October calendar.

03 October – Hout Bay Twin Peaks: Starts and finishes at Dunes Restaurant in Hout Bay and offers beautiful scenery, adventurous trails, strong coffee, cold beer and great vibes! You can run the full 42km, 30km, or just the first loop of 16km.

04 October – SPAR Women’s Challenge:  The Johannesburg leg of the SPAR Women’s Challenge gives women of all ages, shapes, and fitness levels the opportunity to lace up and take part in either a 5km or 10km run/walk – no pressure, just purpose. The event takes place at Marks Park Sports Club, Randburg, starting at 08h00. Get there early!

04 October – Midvaal MADMAC Marathon (42.2km, 22km, 11km, 5km): A comprehensive, multi-distance day hosting full marathons down to short fun runs, starting at Café du Cirque in Meyerton.

09-11 October – Glencairn Trail Run: A weekend of trail running, catering for all abilities, at the foothills of the majestic Sani Pass Valley. Based at Glencairn Farm, Himeville, South Africa.

10 October – Bakgat 10km: A swift, local community road race held at Bellville High School.

11 October – Township 2 Township Marathon (42.2km & 21.1km): A legendary local road running fixture. The full marathon starts at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu, the half marathon kicks off in Chesterville, and both routes conclude beautifully at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi.

11 October – Ommiedraai 10km & 5km: A highly popular, fast community favourite held annually in Kenilworth.

18 October – JRAC Half Marathon (21.1km & 5km): A great regional half-marathon challenge that winds through Centurion, starting at Sutherland High School.

18 October – Nelson Mandela Marathon: 42km fast and flat marathon with a 6:30 cut-off; 21km – the old Slave Route Challenge half marathon; a flat 10km run/walk through historical city landmarks and a 5km run/walk through the heart of the Mother City. Starts and finishes outside the City Hall on the Grand Parade.

31 October – Jetour Nedbank 10km & 5km Fun Run: A fast end-of-month suburban loop running from the Cape Gate Lifestyle Centre in Brackenfell.
