With the Hybrid series, which includes the new Hybrid Runner and Hybrid Rocket, Puma melds street style and technology. At the core of the Hybrid Runner is a dual midsole that functions to propel the wearer faster while also providing a comfortable ride.

The shoe is a conversation starter with its bead-embedded sole. The soft knit upper gives the impression of running in a cushioned sock. While the shoe can feel loose in the forefoot on a run, the lacing system somewhat alleviates this problem, making the shoe a little snugger when tightened.

The Runner’s World Shoe Lab rated the Hybrid Runner among the heaviest tested and quite firm in the forefoot. Wear-tester feedback was split in these categories, with one tester stating the cushioning was sufficient in keeping their legs shin splint-free, albeit over shorter runs.

The hybrid foam midsole makes for a bouncy ride, which compelled one tester to run faster. However, runners may want to turn down the speed over slick roads, as traction was rated especially low.

The Hybrid Runner is for neutral runners who prefer minimal cushioning and little stability. It’s an everyday trainer best suited for short road runs and cross-training.

“I loved the Hybrid Runner’s knitted sock-like feel, and the beaded sole provided a great energy boost. Great for a quick run.” said RW‘s Digital Ed Penny Trevena.

Midsole

The midsole is comprised of two foams for cushioning and energy return, hence the “hybrid” in the sneaker’s moniker. The trippy, bumpy texture on the exterior of the Hybrid Runner is Puma’s NRGY midsole, composed of beads for cushion and comfort. Ignite foam also assists with propulsion and responsiveness.

Our testers found the midsole to be comfortable and springy. The sneaker performed well from 5K-10K, however, runners weren’t convinced the shoe was suited for longer distances. “I need something more sturdy,” said one tester.

Outsole

The Hybrid Runner’s outsole is adequately durable but it rated poorly for traction by our wear-testers; runners found wet roads to be slippery and turns difficult to maneuver. Trail runners reported not much stability on uneven ground and some ankle rolling, which stands to reason for a shoe designed to be worn on roads.

Upper

Testers liked the knit upper’s sock-like fit and comfortable feel. While some initially thought the novel lacing system looked unusual, they appreciated its effectiveness in keeping the foot snug and secure. The Hybrid Runner has a tongueless cradle and a heel pull tab, which makes slipping into the sneaker easier.
