On A Mission 

On a mission to help reduce net carbon emissions, the brand gave one of its most popular shoes an eco-conscious makeover. Brooks chose its iconic model, the Ghost, as its first carbon-neutral shoe. 

Have no fear, though: it’s still the same ol’ Ghost. But Brooks has laid out a plan for net zero carbon emissions by 2040, using recycled materials and carbon offsets. 

According to Brooks, 150 million people run worldwide. That means a lot of shoes contributing to climate change through the manufacturing process, shipping, and waste.

Climate Conscious 

The Ghost 14 is constructed with recycled, bio-based materials. It’s undergone a climate conscious makeover From the dyeing process, to almost all upper textiles have been converted to contain a minimum of 30% recycled polyester, and many are 100% recycled polyester — including the sockliner top cloth, tongue lining, toe box reinforcement, and more.

Changes from the previous edition are also seen in the midsole, the updated midsole is now 100% DNA LOFT cushioning for an even softer, smoother ride. Heel and midfoot strikers will feel this cushioning is not too soft, yet will appreciate how fresh their legs feel running high mileage on hard surfaces.

Why The Ghost?

Ghost was introduced in 2008 with the goal of creating a go-to neutral shoe for runners. At the time, the director of product management was known for doing all his running workouts at night — and was therefore nicknamed “the Ghost,” which eventually became the shoe’s name.
