Two Oceans Given Go Ahead But Reduced Field Expected

Vastly reduced field set to line up for Two Oceans return

In a strongly-worded statement the City of Cape Town finally announced that they had finally given the Totalsports Two Oceans permission to go ahead after concerns from church groups that access to Easter Services would be affected by road closures.
In the statement, the City said that ‘the decision was made following lengthy revision of the Two Oceans Marathon NPC event plans and supporting documents as required by the Events By-Law together with the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act.”
“After extensive, albeit belated, efforts by the race organisers to properly consult affected churches, there is now a clear traffic plan for churches that will ensure Easter services can go ahead.”
Additionally Two Ocean Marathon board has committed to moving the event away from Easter Weekend in future. In past years both the half marathon and full marathon had taken place on Easter Saturday but in 2022 the half marathon will take place on Saturday and the ultra on Sunday.
Reduced Field
Organisers have remained tight-lipped around the number of entries but sources close to the race have confirmed that the ultra has less than 5000 entries and the half marathon just over 10 000. In past years, the ultra attracted a field of 12000 while the half marathon field topped at 16 000.
This weekend’s race will be the first since 2019.
