Race Into Spring: August’s Must-Run Events

August is packed with reasons to lace up. As winter begins to loosen its grip and the first signs of spring appear, runners across South Africa have plenty to look forward to. The mornings are getting a little lighter, the afternoons a little warmer, and the race calendar is bursting with everything from fast 10Ks and scenic trail runs to iconic road races.

Whether you’re chasing a personal best, building towards a spring marathon, or simply enjoying the return of longer daylight hours, August is the perfect month to pin on a race number and make the most of the changing season.

7-9 August: SOX Trail Run, Wilderness, Western Cape
You will run on pristine hiking trails in the Outeniqua mountains on day one, experience the tranquillity of lush, indigenous forest on day two and end with day three along the stunning coastline of the Garden Route. Race Village is at the Fairy Knowe Hotel, Wilderness. Get all the details here.

Sunday 9 August: Totalsports Women’s Race – Cape Town
This popular event features 10km and 5km routes – 10km starts in Darling Street; 5km starts in Castle Street with both finishing at the Grand Parade. 10km gets underway at 08h00, with the 5km starting at 08h30. Entries are sold out, so don’t think you can enter at Race Pack Collection. Find out all the details via their website.

Sunday 16 August: Totalsports Women’s Race – Johannesburg
This time it’s the Jozi women taking to the streets. The event offers a 10km and a 5km and starts and finishes from Mark’s Park, Judith Ave, Emmarentia at 08h00 and 08h30 respectively. Details can be found via the same website as the Cape Town event.

Saturday 22 August: Langebaan Half-Marathon – West Coast
Starting and finishing from the Langebaan Town Hall, Bree Street in Langebaan, the event offers a 21km half marathon, 10km and 5km races. Races start from 07h00 onwards. Get more details and enter online here.

Sunday 23 August: Absa RUN YOUR CITY – Tshwane
The streets of the Jacaranda City come alive as runners get to experience a celebration of sport, culture, and community in one of the country’s most iconic cities. The event offers runners a unique opportunity to experience South Africa’s capital city from a different perspective. Known for its runner-friendly layout, the course combines wide, scenic roads with the energy of Tshwane’s iconic surroundings. Find out more here.

Saturday 29 August: Thirsti Spring Half – Tulbagh, Western Cape
Some ideas begin in boardrooms. This one began standing above the Tulbagh Valley, watching the light move across the mountains and realising just how special this place really is. The event offers participants a premium race experience set in the heart of the Cape Winelands, bringing together community, performance, adventure and special moments.
