Fast, Flat and Loads of Fun: The aQuellé Jacaranda City Marathon Challenge
Few cities offer a running experience quite like Pretoria in spring. Every October, South Africa’s capital is transformed beneath a spectacular canopy of gorgeous purple Jacaranda blossoms, creating one of the country’s most iconic road-running backdrops. On Saturday 24 October 2026, thousands of runners will line up for the aQuellé Jacaranda City Marathon Challenge, recognised as South Africa’s largest marathon in 2025.
…runners can look forward to many enhancements designed to deliver an even better race-day experience.
The 2026 edition marks an exciting new chapter. While the event builds on its reputation as one of Gauteng’s premier road races, runners can look forward to many enhancements designed to deliver an even better race-day experience.
A brand-new start and finish venue at Rietondale High School will provide a spacious race village, easier access, improved spectator viewing areas and a vibrant atmosphere where runners, supporters and exhibitors can come together to celebrate the sport.
The route itself has also been refined. Fast, predominantly flat and scenic, it winds through Pretoria’s beautiful eastern suburbs beneath the city’s famous Jacaranda trees in full bloom. Whether you’re chasing an early Comrades Marathon or Two Oceans Marathon qualifier, aiming for a personal best, or simply enjoying a memorable morning on the road, this route offers something special for every runner.

The organisers have also focused on improving the flow of the event from the moment participants arrive at the start line. Improved start procedures will ensure a smooth and enjoyable race-day experience, and will include a seeded corral start system.
Although the new venue provides a wide starting area, the staggered start will improve runner flow, reduce congestion, and enhance service at refreshment stations along the route. Official seeding and wave starts will be introduced for the 10 km, 21.1 km, and 42.2 km races, with runners allocated to seeded corrals based on their qualifying performances.
aQuellé, the Official Hydration Sponsor, will welcome runners at the finish with refreshing hydration, supported by enthusiastic volunteers who will cheer participants on as they cross the finish line.
Whether you’re an experienced marathoner or taking on your very first race, there’s a distance to match your goal:
- 42.2 km Marathon – 06:00
- 21.1 km Half Marathon – 06:00
- 10 km Run – 06:10
- 5 km Fun Run/Walk – 06:20
The event will again host the AGN Marathon Championships, adding further prestige to an already impressive race calendar.

Beyond the competition, the event is about bringing the running community together. Athletics clubs from across South Africa, families lining the route, passionate volunteers and thousands of runners combine to create an atmosphere that is welcoming, energetic and uniquely Pretoria.
Participants entering online can also purchase the official 2026 event T-shirt, while every finisher will receive a brand-new commemorative medal to celebrate their achievement.
As the Sportsvendo team explains: “We’re not chasing the title of South Africa’s largest marathon again. Our focus is on creating the greatest marathon experience for every runner and walker in 2026.”
Whether you’re chasing a qualification, a personal best or simply looking for an unforgettable spring race, the aQuellé Jacaranda City Marathon Challenge 2026 offers the perfect opportunity to experience Pretoria at its purple best.
This October, gather your running club, training partners, family and friends and discover why thousands of runners are choosing to run through the Jacaranda City. Entries close on 20 October 2026, unless the race reaches its capacity before the closing date.
