On Saturday 8 November 2025, Pretoria’s Jacaranda-lined streets will once again set the stage for one of Gauteng’s most respected races: the aQuellé Jacaranda City Challenge, presented by Sportsvendo and Faranani Athletics Club. Known as Pretoria’s City Marathon, this iconic event blends endurance, atmosphere, and community spirit, making it a highlight on South Africa’s running calendar.

Over 8 000 participants are expected to take part in this year’s event…

A Race with Legacy
The Jacaranda City Challenge has been part of Pretoria’s sporting heartbeat for over 25 years. Since its revitalisation in 2011, it has grown to attract thousands of runners annually. Over 8 000 participants are expected to take part in this year’s event, from elite athletes chasing podium finishes to novices testing their fitness.

The race is a true celebration of the running community, bringing together seasoned Comrades and Two Oceans warriors alongside everyday enthusiasts, all determined to conquer Pretoria’s streets.

Distances for Every Runner
The event offers something for every fitness level and fast running courses:

  • 42.2km Marathon: A double-lap course and official Comrades & Two Oceans qualifier. It also serves as the AGN Marathon Championship and includes stretches of speed and some steady climbs.
  • 21.1km Half Marathon: A blend of speed and endurance through Pretoria’s historic suburbs.
  • 10km Race: Fast, competitive, and perfect for a personal best.
  • 5km Fun Run: A family-friendly way to soak up the atmosphere.

In a tribute to lifelong endurance, runners over 80 can participate in the longer distances free of charge.

Pretoria’s Jacaranda trees transform the city into a spectacular purple tunnel, creating a unique backdrop for the event.

More Than Just a Race
Each November, Pretoria’s Jacaranda trees transform the city into a spectacular purple tunnel, creating a unique backdrop. But the event is more than scenery, it’s about grit. Supporters line the streets, water stations become checkpoints of resilience, and the energy of cheering crowds carry runners forward. At Rietondale Park, the finish line bursts with celebration as athletes of all levels earn their medals and pride.

Powered by Partnership
Long-standing partnerships help elevate the event. aQuellé has supported the challenge for more than seven years, with 2025 marking their third year as title sponsor. Their involvement ensures a world-class race-day experience, with aQuellé water keeping runners refreshed along the way.
