A win and an Under-20 world record?

That’s what Letsile Tebogo accomplished on Tuesday at the U20 World Championships in Cali, Colombia. The 19-year-old sprinter from Botswana ran 9.91 in the 100-metre final to take the gold.

Tebogo left no doubt about it in that final. As he was separating from the field and getting closer to the finish line, he started to celebrate the win with the race victory locked up.

While the early celebration could be deemed as disrespectful to his opponents, he says that it was not his intent.

Tobago’s win is a part of an impressive stretch of wins and records that he’s produced this season.

“The statement was to come out and enjoy the race,” he told World Athletics after the race. “If somebody took it as disrespect, I’m really sorry. I saw the fans and (it was so) everybody watching at home can enjoy the race—to remind them a little bit about what Usain Bolt did back in the days. He’s my idol—the person I look up to.”

Tobago’s win is a part of an impressive stretch of wins and records that he’s produced this season. At the World Championships in Oregon a couple of weeks back, he broke the then-U20 record in the 100m with his time of 9.94.

In the semifinal round of the 100 meters at the U20 World Championships, his time of 10.00 broke the championship record, which was then broken again with his 9.91 winning time in the event.

Tobago will return to Eugene in the fall, joining the University of Oregon’s track and field team.
