Earlier in the week, Caster Semenya pulled off an extraordinary victory in the women’s 1,500-metre final, setting a new Games Record – and breaking Zola Budd’s 34-year-old record – in a time of 4:00:71. But she still had one more goal in her mind – to win the double gold.
Starting out in lane five, 27-year-old Semenya looked focused and rearing to go. She broke away from the pack with around 150-metres to go and soared effortlessly ahead of the bunch towards a double victory. Semenya set another Games Record in a time of 1:56.68. She was followed by Kenyan Margaret Nyairera Wambui in 1:58.07, and Jamaican Natoya Goule in 1:58.82.
Semenya is the third woman in the history of the Commonwealth Games to win double gold in the 800-metre and 1,500-metre races. This is South Africa’s 13th Commonwealth Games gold medal.
