SUMMARY:MiWay Wally Hayward Marathon [POSTPONED]
DESCRIPTION:In light of the outbreak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and the subsequent postponement or cancellation of sporting events and mass gatherings in the country\, the MiWay Wally Hayward Marathon organising committee\, in co-operation with the relevant authorities\, have made a decision to postpone the race. The safety of our participants\, sponsors\, suppliers\, supporters and members of the public is of utmost importance to us. \n\nThe MiWay Wally Hayward Marathon is a road-running race\, marathon\, half marathon and fun run in Gauteng\, covering 42.2km\, 21.1km\, 10km\, 4.9km and 1km\, on 1 May 2020. \nWally Hayward’s exceptional running career spanned six decades\, and although he represented South Africa at the Olympic Games and set numerous ultra-distance world records\, he is best remembered for his remarkable achievements in the Comrades Marathon\, which he won five times and completed successfully at the ages of 79 and 80. \nProbably the most remarkable achievement of the great Wally Hayward was finishing the 1988 Comrades Marathon\, just before his 80th birthday. Wally stunned the world by finishing in a time of 9:44.1\, beating more than half the field. In 1989\, just a few weeks short of his 81st birthday\, he completed his last Comrades just before the cut-off\, in 10:58.03\, in front of a rapturous crowd to become the oldest finisher in Comrades history. \nHe died on 28 April 2006\, at the age of 97\, a couple of days before the Wally Hayward Marathon that year\, held\, as always\, on the Workers’ Day public holiday\, on 1 May. \nPre-entries\, on active.com\, close on 15 April.

SUMMARY:Rising Sun Chatsworth Freedom Marathon
DESCRIPTION:The 52km  Chatsworth Freedom Marathon is an undulating route which is predominantly run through the sprawling residential areas of Chatsworth. It is a one lap course   with some sections of the route being repeated.  Many kilometres of the race will be run along the major Higginson Highway and about 4km will be run along the scenic and wooded Silverglen Nature Reserve. This section of the race normally rejuvenates the tired runners as they take in the scenery and large gulps of fresh natural air into their lungs. \nThere are about 22 well stocked tables along the route catering for the needs of the runners. Chatsworth residents\,volunteers and sport-loving people man the watering points from as early as 4h00 in the morning. The traditional Chatsworth hospitality of bangra\,eastern and western music is found blaring out at most watering tables.A festive atmosphere seems to envelope the running route which gives the runners an added impetus. \nThis has been a trouble –free marathon over the years and the Club hopes to maintain this impeccable record. \nThe two time ex Comrades winner Stephen Muzhingi From Zimbabwe commented that the Chatsworth Freedom Ultra Marathon was the best training ground for the onslaught on the Comrades. This was after he had won the Chatsworth Ultra  twice and then went on to repeat this feat at the Comrades. \nThe Freedom Marathon is another symbol of democratic freedom achieved in the face of adversity\,racism and corruption. Long may the Light of Freedom shine in our beloved Country!! \nClick here to enter online.

SUMMARY:Birchwood Half Marathon [CANCELLED]
DESCRIPTION:In line with the President’s address last night to the nation regarding the Covid19 virus\, we have met with all major stakeholders to discuss the best way to proceed with the 2020 Birchwood Half Marathon. The race is very close to our hearts and no decisions have been made lightly or without extensive discussion. In addition to the huge disappointment for both the participants and the organisers\, there are massive financial implications to canceling an event of this magnitude so close to the actual event date.  \nAs our primary responsibility is the health and safety of our participants and staff\, we have had to make the very difficult decision of canceling the 2020 edition of the Birchwood Half Marathon. The Birchwood Hotel\, who have shown us amazing support\, unfortunately have other events scheduled that mean that we are currently unable to reschedule for this year.  \nSadly\, as we are only weeks away from the event date\, most hard costs have already been incurred. Medals and t-shirts have been printed\, and most suppliers have had to be paid for already. As per our race terms and conditions\, no race entries are refundable. However\, we would still like to issue shirts to all entrants who qualified to receive one.  Click here for the full statement. \nGet those laces tied and sweat gear ready for the 10 th Birchwood Half Marathon which\, after a decade of growth and popularity\, is set to pull out all the stops for the 2020 race. Sign up for the 5\, 10 or 21\,1km races taking place on Sunday\, 19 April 2020 starting at the Birchwood Hotel OR Tambo Conference Centre in Boksburg. For more information or to enter\, visit www.birchwoodhalfmarathon.com. \nWhat began in 2010 as a fun-run\, has grown in to a permanent fixture on every athlete’s calendar. The Birchwood Half-Marathon has become one of the most anticipated running events in Gauteng and forms the perfect stepping stone for your Comrades Marathon training and preparation. With a 21.1km\, and 10km available\, the event has something for the experience runner\, as well as those new to the sport. Join us afterwards for prize-giving and chat with our running clubs\, on-site sponsors or grab a foot rub from Birchwood’s Mangwanani Boutique Spa.

SUMMARY:Investgold Two Lagoons Race [CANCELLED]
DESCRIPTION:The organisers of the Investgold Wilderness Festival decided that\, in accordance with government’s decision to cancel all gatherings of 100 or more people\, to cancel the 2020 Wilderness Festival. \nOn Sunday 15 March\, president Cyril Ramaphosa announced that all gatherings of 100 or more people will be banned in an attempt to stop the spread of the Covid-19 (Corona) virus. Therefore the 2020 Wilderness Festival will not continue. \nThe health risk to exhibitors and festival visitors is a major concern\, and we are committed to the fight against the spread of the Covid-19 virus. \nWe are convinced that the cancellation of the 2020 event is in the interest of everyone involved\, including the residents of the coastal town of Wilderness. We are in the process of contacting all artists and exhibitors and will engage in negotiations to determine the way forward. \nAs organisers\, we are looking at a number of possibilities in order to find alternatives\, and will inform all stakeholders of our decisions. \nThe 30km race follows an undulating route and serves as ideal training for Comrades and Two Oceans. The 10km is fast and flat and is run partly on gravel roads. The 2km Fun Run is ideal for kids and walkers alike. \nMedals are awarded to all finishers and handsome cash prizes to category winners. Lucky draw prizes include a weekend getaway for two\, a game drive and meal vouchers. \nPre-entries\, on aswd.co.za\, close on 10 April\, and at Top Gear Sport on Meade Street\, on 11 April at 5pm. You can also enter at the venue on 12 April\, between 2pm and 5pm. \nFor more information visit aswd.co.za/event/two-lagoons-4/ or wildfestival.co.za

SUMMARY:Arthur Creswell Memorial Ultra Marathon & Half
DESCRIPTION:Race Status re Covid-19: The Arthur Cresswell board is meeting to discuss the best plan going forward. NO decisions have been made thus far about the race. We are also waiting on communication from KZNA and ASA. \nThis year will see this famous run for the 54th year. Conceived in the pub of the Old Country Club in Golf Street\, by late Dave Gardner and Dart Bousefield.  The first 2 years\, 1966 and 1967\, saw the runners coming into Ladysmith via the by-pass\, down Harrismith Road\, turning into Keate Street\, then Queen Street\, running through the old car park next to the Town Hall and finishing with a lap around the old Oval.  Mayor Rankin of Bergville started the Inaugural race at 07h00 on 8 May 1966.  Manie Khun was the first ever winner in a good time of 3:42:20 for 56 km. \nSince those early days\, both the start and the finish have been changed quite considerably.  This year’s race will start in front of Bergville Municipality in Bergville and finish at the LAC Clubhouse in Klipbank Road\, making it a distance of 52km.  Starting time is 06h00.  A 21 km run will also take place on the same day and will start at 07h00 from the LAC Clubhouse in Klipbank Road.  The race could never take place without the sponsorship\, support and help of business houses and the public of Ladysmith.  (Names of businesses who contributed will be published after the event).  We are proud of the fact that our seconding tables are known as some of the best in the country and a very big thank-you to all of those who so willingly man them.  We are looking forward to a large crowd supporting the runners at the finish. \nWe are looking forward to seeing all our supporters there !! \nClick here to download the entry form

SUMMARY:The Hollard DareDevil Run
DESCRIPTION:South Africa’s ballsiest 5km Run is back and ready to raise eyebrows while raising awareness of male cancers. \nicking off at 15h00\, the 5km fun run dares the city’s bravest males to strip down to Purple Speedos and run through the streets in the name of a good cause. \nThe “Run-not-a-race” encourages men of all ages\, shapes and sizes to run five kilometres through peak hour traffic in an effort to drive awareness of the scourge of male cancers in South Africa. The act of stripping down to nothing but a Speedo is not only challenging for runners (and for some onlookers!) but also challenges stereotypes about male cancers\, in the interests of starting conversations about understanding and lowering cancer risk\, and encouraging early testing for prostate cancer.

SUMMARY:Slave Route Challenge Half Marathon & 10km Run/Walk
DESCRIPTION:A unique race with a heritage and historic significance.  This event traces the ‘slave route’ and honours those who built Cape Town. \nThe Slave Route Challenge brings together people from all walks of life.  The avid runner can enjoy a Half Marathon or a 10km Run and novices can enjoy the 10km Big Walk or the 5km Fun Run / Walk. It truly encapsulates the spirit of Ubunthu! \nThe Slave Route Challenge takes you from The City Hall through District 6\, Gardens\, Company Gardens\, Wale Street\, BoKaap\, Sea Point (Cape Town Stadium)\, Green Point (Fort Wynyard)\, CBD and back down Darling Street into the Castle of Good Hope and the finish on the Grand Parade. \nRunners and walkers are given the opportunity to run and walk in District Six and the BoKaap\, to marvel at the beauty and cultural diversity of Cape Town\, to experience the heritage sites\, to run through the Castle of Good Hope\, to appreciate our cultural diversity and to embrace other Capetonians. \nThe route was selected because it passes heritage sites like the whipping post where slaves were whipped\, the hurling swing pump where slaves had to pump water for their masters\, the company bell that rang to call slaves\, gallows hill where slaves were executed\, the Castle where slaves were imprisoned and tortured and the slave tree plaque where slaves were sold. \nIn the BoKaap the runners and walkers enjoy a traditional Cape Malay Koesister! A sweet spicy delicacy! (Sponsored by Spice Mecca)

SUMMARY:Pirates 21k powered by Medshield
DESCRIPTION:Are you Tough Enough for the Pirates 21k? \nSUNDAY 16th February 2020 is that time again for Gauteng’s toughest 21km race. Are you tough enough?  The race is positioned as a conditioner for Two Oceans and Comrades and an ideal opportunity to get an indication of how your training is progressing. \nThis year we are excited to annouce MEDSHIELD as our new sponsor and that the first 2000 online entrants will receive a free t-shirt! \nThe race follows a circular route\, running past the water tower on top of Northcliff Hill and back again. The first half has three challenging hills\, the first starting after one kilometer and then undulating with two more climbs\, the last peaking at the King of the Mountain point at about 14km. The downhill after that is fast\, enabling runners to pick up time. The start and finish are at the Pirates Club\, Braeside Road\, Greenside. \nThere will be NO entries at registration and on the day of the race\, so enter now so to avoid missing out…  The entry cap stands firm at 6000 runners. \nThere will be live entertainment\, food trucks and a licensed bar in the clubhouse. For the kids\, we have a whole host of play facilities\, so it makes a great day out for the whole family. \nEntries officially close on 7 February 2020\, or earlier if our entry cap is reached\, and with only 6000 spots available\, you should enter TODAY to avoid missing out! \nClick here to enter
