A Running Harem Of Girlfriends

by Lilanie Greyling

I am in the very fortunate position of having a sort of “running harem” of girlfriends… (expect I’m a girl too!) meaning I always have good company.

A year ago my hubby gave me an iPod for Xmas – to run with… and I ended up never using it for that purpose. You see, as running turns out to be super addictive and also contagious, all my friends have started running too – so I never have to run alone.

We refer to ourselves as the “moms-on-the-run” as we are all moms of a truckload of kids and all juggle careers, kids, hubbies and housework… but never miss our daily dose of adrenaline.

Its seems to be the one common thing that keeps you sane in an otherwise erratic world!

How my friends inspire me?

Well… running with my friends is like having coffee and cake, but without the calories! Our running time together is time for laughter, heart to hearts, a good “skinner”, sharing concerns about kids and schoolwork, brainstorming and so much more… and getting fitter, faster and stronger in the process. We all have our virtues as runners too: there is the pacemaker, who taught us to get to 10km and 21 km patiently, the speedsters who gets us home faster, the racers who make sure we race as much as possible and the idealists that conjure up visions of the New York and London marathons… and then the friend who had never ran in her life and that – through a year of religious training from rock bottom, has been joining in our Saterday 10km races recently…

The bottom line… I feel not only inspired, but proud to be part of this bond of runners… they have literally help keep me going!
