Crossing a half marathon finish line often sparks a new running goal: a full marathon! After all, if you’ve already run 21.2K, doubling the distance can seem like the logical progression. But the transition from half to full isn’t so straightforward.

…the transition from half to full isn’t so straightforward.

While a few aspects of half marathon training translate to the full marathon, including the types of workouts you need, marathon training amplifies the demand put on both your body and your mind. The increased race distance means longer training cycles, more time on your feet, and a greater need to dial in the details that might not matter as much in a half.

Runners moving from a half to a full marathon often experience the same few pitfalls, but once you know what they are, they’re usually fixable.

We spoke to RRCA-certified run coach, certification instructor, and principal lecturer at Coastal California University, Christine Rockey, who reveals the three most common mistakes runners make when transitioning from a half to a full marathon for the first time, and how you can avoid them.

1. Not Prioritising Fuelling
Failing to prioritise fueling is the single biggest issue Rockey sees with athletes making the jump from a half to a full.

In a half marathon, many runners can get through a race with minimal fuelling or by grabbing one or two gels sporadically throughout a race. The marathon is a completely different physiological challenge, and will certainly overwhelm someone with a haphazard fuelling strategy, Rockey explains. The longer duration means your body will run low on readily available energy if you don’t take in carbohydrates along the way.

When runners aren’t fuelling during training, warning signs often show up in subtle ways before race day arrives. “You’re going to see fatigue, lack of motivation, not wanting to do the workouts you’re scheduled to do,” Rockey says. “One of the things that [you can measure] is a spike in your resting heart rate.” These signals often indicate that your body isn’t recovering properly between runs.

Prioritising pre-run and post-run meals is an easy way to start righting that ship. Prerun meals should include a balance of macronutrients, with a focus on carbs. Post-run fuelling should prioritise carbs, but also include some protein, within 30 to 60 minutes of finishing your effort.

You should also rehearse your race-day nutrition routine.

You should also rehearse your race-day nutrition routine. “If you’re going to run in the morning, you should practice fuelling with whatever you plan to eat on race day to make sure it sits well,” Rockey explains.

Even more crucial: practicing midrun fuelling. Rockey has seen many athletes who assume they can figure it out close to race day, but that approach can backfire. As soon as your plan calls for runs of 90 minutes or more, “you’re going to want to start practising doing some fuelling,” Rockey says.

2. Undertraining
Another common mistake for runners moving into full marathon training is inconsistency and the resulting undertraining issues that come from it.

Most runners who have completed a half marathon understand the importance of a structured training plan in keeping them consistent. However, many people can also successfully train for and race 21.1K with cracks in their plan, but those cracks can create big problems when going for 42.2K. Undertraining, not running fast, far, or frequently enough, has greater consequences in a marathon because of the physiological demands late in the race.

Oftentimes, skipping workouts can lead to undertraining. And while it’s rarely intentional, when you start missing more workouts than you realise, the probability of a bad race skyrockets. “You could get injured,” Rockey says. “But there’s the mental side of things, too. You can feel like a failure if things don’t go the way you expected.”

One of the best ways to lower the risk of undertraining is by having a solid base before you even begin your marathon plan. “I really think [runners] should have at least 500 to 800 kilometres of a base,” says Rockey. “Just get an idea of your life as a runner.” If it’s only been a few weeks since your half, you probably have a base already, so the key shifts to maintaining consistency.

One of the telltale signs of undertraining is stagnation. If you’re simply not getting faster in your training over a month or so, it may be time to check your training log for skipped runs, especially quality efforts like interval workouts or long runs.

The bottom line: Missing one workout every so often isn’t detrimental, just something to keep an eye on. However, if you regularly skip your quality workouts or miss full weeks of training, it may be time to reevaluate and build up toward a more manageable goal.

3. Misjudging the Challenge
Even runners who trained really well for their half marathon will experience unexpected challenges, both physical and mental, when moving up to a full marathon.

“When you hit the 21K mark, you’re not halfway there, even though on paper you are,” Rockey says. Essentially, you have physically travelled half the distance, but you haven’t experienced the full scope of the challenge yet.

In the later stages of a marathon, your body is operating in new territory. Glycogen stores run low, muscle fatigue mounts, and your ability to maintain pace becomes increasingly tied to fuelling and mental resilience, Rockey says. If you’ve only done half marathons before, you simply don’t know what that feeling is like. “I’ve done about 100 marathons, and in every one around 32K I’m still like, ‘Oh my god, why did I sign up for this?’” Rockey says.

Getting as ready as possible for that moment at 32K comes during race prep, especially on long runs where you’re spending extended time on your feet without the energy of race-day crowds to push you, explains Rockey. “At home, you’re literally running by yourself,” she says. “The only person to hold you accountable is you.”

The first step in holding yourself accountable and building mental resilience is simply getting out the door consistently, as mentioned above. Once you’re out running, work on your mental game just as much as your physical. Some strategies to consider include positive self-encouragement, running with a buddy, or Rockey’s suggestion: “I play games with myself,” she says. “I’ll try to do math problems or count backwards from 100.”

South Africa’s Adriaan Wildschutt produced a superb performance to win the 2026 New York City Half Marathon on Sunday, announcing himself as a major force on the international road racing circuit.

The win marks one of the biggest victories of the South African distance runner’s career…

Wildschutt surged to victory in 59:30, pulling away late in the race to finish 11 seconds ahead of American Zouhir Talbi, who took second place. The race attracted a deep elite field and more than 30 000 runners on the popular 13.1-mile park-to-park course through New York City.

The win marks one of the biggest victories of the South African distance runner’s career and continues his impressive transition from track to road racing. Known for his strength over 5000m and 10 000m on the track, Wildschutt showed his range with a controlled and confident performance over the half marathon distance.

The race also featured Olympic track medalist Grant Fisher, who finished 14th in 1:00:53 in his half marathon debut. In the women’s race, Kenya’s Hellen Obiri delivered another standout performance, setting a course record of 1:06:33.

For South African running fans, Wildschutt’s victory is particularly significant. Winning a major international half marathon in sub-60 minutes places him among the elite road racers in the world and adds another milestone to a career that continues to gather momentum on the global stage.

Thirty-three-year-old Lesotho athlete, and reigning Two Oceans champion, Joseph Khoarahlane Seutloali, raced to a record-breaking victory at the OUTsurance Gun Run Half Marathon on a perfect spring day in Cape Town this past weekend, while fast-rising KZN athlete, Busisiwe Chamane, raced to a memorable victory in the women’s race.

Seutloali’s time was just 11 seconds off his personal best of 1:01:56 for the distance…

Seutloali crossed the finish line in Green Point in 1:02:07, 24 seconds inside the previous race record, set by Joel Mmone in the 2015 race and 38 seconds clear of Stellenbosch-based Anthony Timoteus, with last year’s winner Lloyd Bosman third, a further 19 seconds back.

Seutloali’s time was just 11 seconds off his personal best of 1:01:56 for the distance, set in Gqeberha in 2019.

Chamane raced clear early in the race and stayed ahead of her closest challenger, Anel Terblanche, throughout the race to win in 1:17:45, 54 seconds clear of Nedbank Western Cape athlete, Terblanche, with Carla Johnson (ASICS Cape Town) third.

“Joseph is in good shape at the moment,” said his coach, Andrew Booyens. “He’s been competing well over shorter distances. He finished just 13 seconds behind the winner, Kabelo (Mulaudzi), in the RYC 10km in Tshwane last month (Seutloali placed 4th).

“When the Olympic window opens next December, we will look for a fast marathon in Europe to qualify, but for now he’s doing well in local races and he will be back in Cape Town next year in a title defence of his Two Oceans Marathon title.”

Seutloali was content to stay with an eight-strong pack through 5km, which included Bosman, Timoteus, Two Oceans Half Marathon winner, William Kaptein, former Gun Run champion, Desmond Mokgobu, last year’s third-placed finisher Edward Jack and his Tymebank Langa teammate Yanga Malusi, and top steeplechase and trail athlete, Siboniso Soldaka.

Kaptein pushed the pace on the long climb from Sea Point to Camps Bay, and only Seutloali was still in contention through 10km. When the Lesotho athlete accelerated, Kaptein fell back, leaving the Seutloali to complete the race on his own, which he did in fine style.

KZN athlete from the Black Diamond Athletics Club, Chamane, started running in 2020 – the first time she had been involved in sport since her days playing soccer and volleyball in primary school. She’s moved fast through the ranks and was in control from the start, and raced through to her first major road running title in the Western Cape.

Busisiwe Chamane is all concentration on her way to winning the 2025 OUTsurance Gun Run Half Marathon.
Gun Run 10km: Another KZN athlete, Adam Lipschitz, ran strongly to win the Gun Run 10km in 29:18, 14 seconds clear of Tymebank Langa’s Bruce-Lynn Damons, with Kaptein third. African triathlon champion, Shanae Williams, held off a fast-finishing Kyla Jacobs to win a close women’s contest in 33:30, with Jacobs, almost back to her best form, just 7 seconds back in second. Australian-based Olga Firsova was a further minute back in third.

Gun Run Trail: Philani Sengce made it a hat-trick of Gun Run trail wins, finishing more than two minutes clear of Khayelitsha’s Zibele Bala in 1:13:14, with Ebeth Marai a clear winner in the women’s race in 1:27:42 ahead of Anine Oosthuizen and former South African international star, Katya Soggot, back to racing in the Masters 50 years age group.

Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo set a stunning world half marathon record of 56 minutes 42 seconds at the eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona by Brooks, a World Athletics Gold Label road race, on Sunday.

With that impressive performance, the 24-year-old two-time world cross-country champion improved on Yomif Kejelcha’s previous world record of 57:30 by 48 seconds – the greatest single improvement on the men’s world half marathon record.

Racing in ideal weather conditions of 13ºC with no wind, Kiplimo became the first athlete to break 57 minutes for the distance and also set a world best of 40:07 for 15km en route to his world half marathon record.

In the women’s race, Kenya’s former world record-holder Joyciline Jepkosgei grabbed a convincing win in a lifetime best of 1:04:13 to retain her title in a course record and move to seventh on the world all-time list.

Despite not having announced a world record assault ahead of the race, the stellar form Kiplimo showed on 31 December in Madrid where he effortlessly clocked 26:32 for 10km suggested something great might happen in Barcelona. During the technical meeting held on Saturday afternoon a 2:45/km rhythm was agreed to be set by Kenya’s Edwin Kimosong for the opening kilometres, yet that 58-minute final pace proved too easy for Kiplimo as the Ugandan, eager to regain the world record he set in Lisbon back in 2021, took full command of the race some eight minutes into the event.

From then on Kiplimo offered an incredible display of strength, going faster and faster to reach 5km in 13:34, already on world record pace. By then, Kenyans Geoffrey Kamworor and Samwel Mailu travelled together some 19 seconds in arrears, while Italy’s European champion Yemaneberhan Crippa was a lonesome fourth in 14:02.

Kiplimo began to cover the following kilometres in the 2:40-2:42 range to go through the 10km checkpoint in 26:46, clearly inside the world record pace of 27:15, while Kamworor and Mailu clocked a still quick 27:39 to Crippa’s 28:02. The lonesome leader continued to pick up his cadence over the second half and his 15km split was initially recorded as 39:47 before it was confirmed after the race as 40:07, improving his own world best. By then it became clear that, barring disaster, he would become the world record-holder again as his splits suggested that even a sub-57:00 final clocking was more than feasible.

The Ugandan ace didn’t falter over the closing kilometres and was timed at 53:42 for the 20km mark to complete another 26:46 10km section. He finished in a blistering 56:42 – a ‘beamonesque’ performance as the previous world record stood at 57:30. Way back, Kamworor clinched the runner-up spot in 58:44 and Mailu completed the podium in 59:40.

“It has been the perfect race,” said Kiplimo. “Ideal temperature, no wind at all, fantastic circuit – everything went better than expected. The pacemaker set the agreed 2:45 pace but I found myself full of energy and decided to inject a brisker rhythm from the third kilometre, but I never imagined to perform under the 57 minute barrier, that’s astonishing.

“I won’t compete any more until my marathon debut in London on 27 April.”

Title defender Jepkosgei finds no opposition

Although overshadowed by Kiplimo’s feat, the women’s race witnessed a world-class contest led by Jepkosgei. The 31-year-old Kenyan had the company of her compatriot Gladys Chepkurui and the Ethiopian pair of Alemtsehay Zerihun and Addise Kebede for the opening kilometres, but she was a lonesome leader by the 5km point which she reached in 15:25 to Chepkurui and Kebede’s 15:30.

Taking advantage of the slightly downhill 5-10km section, Jepkosgei stepped up her rhythm to go through 10km in 30:08, a massive 37 seconds clear of Chepkurui who herself was well ahead of the Ethiopian duo, Zerihun (31:27) and Kebede (31:46).

The leader continued her relentless campaign over the second half, averaging 3:04 for the third 5km section to clock 45:27 for 15km some 1:14 clear of Chepkurui, who was more than a minute ahead of Zerihun and Kebede.

As she reached the tape, Jepkosgei managed a career-best by 16 seconds to take back-to-back titles in Barcelona in 1:04:32, while Chepkurui was a distant second in 1:06:23 to Zerihun’s third place in 1:08:19.

The half marathon takes more commitment to prepare for than a 5K or 10K, but it’s not so challenging that training for it feels like it’s taking over your life, like training for a marathon might feel. That’s probably why the half marathon is the favourite distance among runners.

It takes runners an average of two hours and 15 minutes to finish 21.1 kilometres, according to race data collected by recent data from RunRepeat, which takes into account 35 million results collected from more than 28 000 races in the last 20 years. That’s not nothing, but it’s a time and distance that’s firmly in the realm of possibility for any runner who wants to try one.

But to enjoy the experience of running this distance, you have to know what you’re getting yourself into. Whether you’re starting from zero or have some experience racing 5Ks and 10Ks, these coach-approved tips will help you prepare for your first half marathon.

What to Expect from Half Marathon Training and How to Maximise Results

Give Yourself Enough Time
Before committing to any race, you have to consider how long you need to train for it. Training plans will vary, whether you use a downloadable plan or work directly with a coach. But “12 weeks of training is very common for a half marathon,” says Megan Sloan, a certified run coach and physical therapist at Smith Physical Therapy and Running Academy.

However, if you have more time, that’s even better. “Sixteen weeks gives you more opportunity for recovery weeks, which allow you to better absorb the work — plus, it gives you more flexibility if something pops up in the middle of training like you get sick or have a vacation planned,” says Julie Sapper, certified running coach and cofounder of Run Farther & Faster.

Find the perfect training plan for you here.

Make Sure You Have a Solid Base
You may need even longer to train for a half marathon if you’re starting straight off the couch. That’s because you want to go into half marathon training with a bit of an aerobic base, says Sloan. “Being able to run five kilometres is a smart idea, but not 10% necessary,” she says.

With an aerobic base, your body will be better able to withstand consistent half-marathon training in which you’ll build up your mileage.

Half marathon training is all about building volume incrementally, says Lisa Levin, certified running coach and other cofounder of Run Farther & Faster. “Everyone is different, but we generally recommend four days a week of running at an easy, conversational pace,” she says.

“You can definitely finish a half marathon with as little as three runs a week, but anywhere from three to five days a week is very common,” adds Sloan.

Stay Consistent
The main goal for most first-timers is just finishing. Accumulating easy mileage is the best way to ensure you can do that — and that takes patience and consistency, especially if you’re starting from zero. “That easy pace is going to be faster or slower depending on weather conditions, terrain, sleep, and a number of other factors,” says Levin.

Beginner training plans don’t typically include more intense workouts, because the point of training is just to increase the time you spend on your feet so you can comfortably complete the 21.1-kilometre distance.

If you’re a seasoned runner who has several weeks of 45-plus kilometres under their belt, then you’ll be able to easily layer in some speed work and tempo work, says Sapper.

Zero In on the Long Run
For first-time half marathons, the most important workout of the week is the long run. “There’s no magical long run number you need to run before race day, but a 16-kilometre long run is quite typical for beginners,” says Sloan. “There’s no need to do more than that!”

Your long runs should also be proportional to the rest of your week. “We like to keep the long run to no more than 50% of weekly mileage,” says Levin. So if you’re looking to hit 16 kilometres on your peak week of training, you should have at least another 16 to 24 kilometres during the week, to put your total peak mileage between at least 32 and 40 kilometres.

You can also go by time instead of distance. “If your long run gets up to two hours, the rest of your week might include three runs between 45 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes,” says Levin.

Head’s up: As your long runs get longer, nutrition becomes really important. “If you’re coming from a 5K and 10K background, chances are you’ve never used nutrition while running,” says Sloan. “You’ll want to replace the carbohydrates and electrolytes that you’re using every 30 to 45 minutes while running, because your body only stores so much — and replacing these midrun can be a game-changer on race day!”

What to Know to Have a Successful Half Marathon Race Day

Do Dress Rehearsals During Training
There’s a rule in running: Nothing new on race day. Your nutrition, your running shoes, the clothes you wear — you should practice with all of this during training, so there are no surprises after you cross the starting line.

Make a Pre-race Plan
“The most important tip we give runners is to have a plan,” says Levin. That starts with the logistics: When and where is bib pick-up? When and where do you have to be at the start, and will you have somewhere to park or need to be dropped off? What’s the bathroom situation? Are there any restrictions on what you can bring to the start? And so on and so on.

“Make sure to lay out your race clothes and everything you’ll need the night before,” says Sloan. “It’s a good idea to start a checklist to make sure you don’t forget anything.”

A race can be a stressful environment, so doing whatever you can to eliminate any questions beforehand will help you stay calm and focused. It’s hard, especially in larger races, but try not to get caught up in anyone else’s nervous energy. Trust your training, practice deep breathing, and visualise your plan for the race while you wait to cross the starting line.

Fuel Up
You should have a fueling strategy in place based on your training: Will you fuel every 30 minutes or every 45 minutes? Are you carrying a handheld with electrolytes, wearing a vest with water, or relying on on-course fluids? (If it’s the latter, make sure to research where aid stations are!)

Set your alarm for early enough that you’ll be able to eat a decent breakfast before your race that can be easily digested, Sloan suggests, and start hydrating early and often, so you show up ready to go.

Have a Smart Pacing Strategy
You also want to have a plan for the race itself. “The number-one mistake runners make is they get caught up in the adrenaline and they either don’t have a plan or throw their plan out the window and go out too fast,” says Levin. A slower start keeps you from burning out early and allows you to conserve energy for those later kilometres in the race.

Most first-time half marathoners should stick to the easy pace they’ve been running in training, especially if your goal is just to cover the distance, but online pace calculators can help you calculate your half-marathon pace based on the time it takes you to run a certain distance or based on shorter distances you’ve run in the past.

Think of pacing a half marathon like turning a dial-up as you run. You should start at a comfortable pace, but the more kilometres you rack up, the harder you’re going to have to work. That may mean increasing the pace, but it can also just mean it’s going to feel harder to maintain the same pace.

Keep in mind, “you will have moments in the race where you don’t feel great, and that’s normal — don’t allow those moments to define your race,” says Sapper. “Realise that this too shall pass and use that moment to think about what your body needs to get past it.”

“We like to divide the race into thirds,” adds Levin. “Run the first third with your head: think smart, stick with your plan. The second third, run with your legs — you’ve covered this mileage before. The final third, run with your heart.”

This run is so difficult it makes grown men cry – one time even a Lady (unconfirmed)

If this is your First Time.

Welcome. You need to do this run. You need to show yourself that you can take on the impossible – and succeed.

This run is a metaphor for your life. As you sit looking at this, it looks impossible and you think you will never be able to do this; you will never make it. It’s true, this is a challenge like no other. We care about you and we want you to succeed. We have a plan to help you overcome this impossible challenge. There are simple steps you can follow that will help you achieve what you never thought you could. We believe in you, we know you can.

When you get to the top of the hill (you will, we guarantee it) you will find the Mini Aid Station. There are two things for you to stop, appreciate, and take in. First, is your achievement. You have made it and you will feel like you have never felt before. On top of the world and able to take on anything life can throw at you – and win! The second thing you will notice, is the view. If the first does not take your breath away, the second will.

If this is your Second Time.

Welcome back. This time will be different.

A shakeout run a day or two before a half or full marathon is a great way to prime your body for what’s to come. It’s also a great time to make meaningful connections with other runners who trained for months to show up to the start. This is why a host of brands and running groups encourage you to join them for a few easy kilometres before you toe the line.

A shakeout run can also provide exactly what you need to calm your race-weekend nerves.

To help you get the most of your shakeout, here are the benefits you can gain, plus a few dos and don’ts to keep in mind.

The Benefits of Shakeout Runs
A shakeout run means clocking a few kilometres at an easy pace a day or two before a half or full marathon. With a few precautions in mind, it can benefit you both mentally and physically.

“There’s activation, there’s mobility, there’s recovery, and all those things come together to create a great performance,” says Emily Booth, member of the NASM scientific advisory board, personal trainer, marathoner, and eight-time Boston Marathon finisher. Shakeout runs fall into the activation category. They can help promote blood flow, neurological activation, and neuromuscular activation, which is really helpful for runners who’ve been tapering for a marathon, Booth explains.

In short, shakeout runs are great for improving your mind-body connection the day before a race, helping you set a rhythm that will come in handy on race day. Plus, these quick and easy runs get your muscles ready to go for your race performance. For those who’ve spent a long time sitting while traveling via car or plane before a race, it’s extremely beneficial because a shakeout run can help loosen tense muscles, Booth adds.

Shakeout runs are also known for bringing runners together and fostering a sense of community, especially the day before big races like The Two Oceans or Comrades marathon. “There’s this unspoken energy about meeting with people, sometimes it’s described as electric and that emotion can be very uplifting,” says James McKirdy, the founder and head coach of McKirdy Training. Plus, it’s an experience you likely won’t forget.

Dos and Don’ts of Shakeout Runs

Do Go Slow
Consider your body’s glycogen stores as your personal energy bank account — you can only make so many withdrawals before you have to refill your account, says Booth. While it’s important to go for a shakeout run at least the day before a marathon to activate your muscles, stay aware of your pace, so you don’t over do it and have trouble replenishing your glycogen stores before your event, she adds. This means running your shakeout at an easy pace.

“If you’re going to run with other people, you should be able to hold a full conversation without huffing and puffing at all,” says Amanda Nurse, owner and founder of Wellness and Run Coaching, and 25-time marathoner.

Booth agrees, suggesting you pay attention to your breathing rate and muscle activation, as burning muscles can also indicate you’re running too fast. Think of your shakeout run effort as no faster than your slowest long run, adds Booth, who recommends aiming for a 3 out of 10 effort on the rate of perceived exertion scale, and staying within zone 1 or 2 if you’re monitoring your heart rate.

Most importantly, remember that a group setting can bring high energy, but being a smart runner means knowing and sticking with your own pace. “Nobody wins the shakeout run, no one wins the warm-up, and that’s what you’ve got to remember,” Booth says.

Don’t Spend Too Much Time On Your Feet
Account for the time you spend walking around and attending other race-related events over the weekend, so you can limit how much time you spend on your feet. McKirdy recommends choosing at most three race weekend events, especially if you’re running in a big city marathons

“It’s really easy to walk kilometres and kilometres on your feet the two or three days leading into the race,” says McKirdy. If it’s a walkable city, you can easily add thousands of steps to your day, which can be a shock to your body if you don’t typically walk that much, he adds. And that can affect your race performance.

Do Stick With Your Training Schedule
“If you don’t typically run the day before your long run or workout and that’s more of a cross-training day or a recovery day, keep it the same,” says Nurse. That means if a shakeout run won’t feel good to you, skip it.

Walking for up to 30 minutes, cycling at a low intensity for about 10 minutes, or running a 5K at an easy pace two days before a race are great alternatives to a shakeout run the day before, Nurse says. Just make sure you take the day off the next day, she adds.

Don’t Judge Your Potential By Your Shakeout Run Performance
Remember: The shakeout run is designed to help you “shake out” your muscles, which requires an easy pace. It’s also a good time to shake out any race jitters, so you can get into a positive mindset, if you haven’t done so already, for race day. It’s not the time to see how fast you can run and use it as a race day predictor.

If you do want to get the legs turning over faster though, Nurse recommends adding a couple of 20- to 30-second strides at a quicker pace, followed by a very slow pace or even a walk to the end of your shakeout run. This can help ease your nerves around performance, she says.

The Milky Way Marathon 2024

We are excited to announce a new venue for the Milky Way Marathon in 2024. We were looking for a venue closer to Cape Town with similar dark skies to that of Sutherland and found the perfect site. At an altitude of 1100m, Leeuwenboschfontein offers an extraordinary view of the night sky that is nearly free from light pollution.

Why this race?

In our rushed lives we just don’t slow down enough and enjoy our surroundings. We are too busy for sunset drinks. We don’t stop for a sunrise…segments, meetings, phone calls all chasing us to keep BUSY. The MWM will slow you down. It will force you to turn off your headlamp and look UP at the beautiful stars.

The run will have a scattered start during the afternoon, after the sun warmed up the crisp Karoo air. Different groups will be set off, depending on your estimated marathon pace. The aim would be for all to see the sun setting in the west as you drop down into the valley after tagging the highest peak (1418m) in the area.

The race offers several unique highlights found in no other race anywhere in the world. Much of the run takes place deep in the forest with a breath-taking view over the Knysna lagoon into The Heads, for inspiration towards the finish.

One race tip is to start slow.

Although no one taking part has ever seen the elusive Knysna elephants, little piles of dung sometimes seen on the route are a reminder that they do inhabit the forest, somewhere.

Keeping this pristine environment in mind and the potential impact of the race on it, all runners share rides into the forest provided by local taxis to the race start in a clearing in the forest.

Runners arriving early are also treated to hot drinks and snacks next to warming fires.

Race Date is 22 JUNE 2024.

Compulsory Registration on 21 JUNE 2024 between 10:00 and 22:00

Online entries only.

No entries will be sold at registration or on race day.

Half Marathon Entries Cost R250.00

Full Marathon Entries Cost R270.00
