2020 is a leap year, and Medihelp invites you to spend 29 February 2020 slaying the 32 km Medihelp Sunrise Monster in Groenkloof, Pretoria.

True to its name, the renowned 32 km Monster offers a challenge for both novice and seasoned runners. The route passes through the Groenkloof Nature Reserve and several leafy suburbs of Pretoria. Expect some tough climbs with a maximum elevation of 1 554 m and some off-road in between through the Klapperkop Nature Reserve.

Runners can also enter the recently introduced Half Monster (21 km), the Mini Monster (10 km) and the Baby Monster – a 5 km fun run/walk through the bea, utiful suburb of Groenkloof.

All races except the 5 km Baby Monster will be timed using ChampionChip devices, so make sure to wear your ChampionChip on the day of the race to have your result recorded. You can purchase your ChampionChip while entering online.

SUNDAY 16^th February 2020 is that time again for Gauteng’s toughest 21km race. Are you tough enough?  The race is positioned as a conditioner for Two Oceans and Comrades and an ideal opportunity to get an indication of how your training is progressing.

This year we are excited to annouce MEDSHIELD as our new sponsor and that the first 2000 online entrants will receive a free t-shirt!

The race follows a circular route, running past the water tower on top of Northcliff Hill and back again. The first half has three challenging hills, the first starting after one kilometer and then undulating with two more climbs, the last peaking at the King of the Mountain point at about 14km. The downhill after that is fast, enabling runners to pick up time. The start and finish are at the Pirates Club, Braeside Road, Greenside.

There will be NO entries at registration and on the day of the race, so enter now so to avoid missing out…  The entry cap stands firm at 6000 runners.

There will be live entertainment, food trucks and a licensed bar in the clubhouse. For the kids, we have a whole host of play facilities, so it makes a great day out for the whole family.

The first kilometer is a fast gentle downhill along Hendrik Potgieter Road. Then a left into the pretty suburb of Little Falls and you start the climb up to the highest point at about 5.5 kilometers. It is a gentle climb up to Witwatersrand Road before turning right with the odd short downhill to relieve your legs. Here you will have a great view of the valley spreading out towards Magaliesberg. Between 5.5 and 6.5 kilometers you drop rapidly, then it is a gentle climb up to eight kilometers, followed by a steady drop to nine kilometers. The climb to the finish in Hendrik Potgieter Road is gentle, but the last 80 meters climb into Clearwater Mall before turning right to the finish is tough.

“We’re a social group of runners from different clubs who’ve been running together on mornings from the local garage in our suburb – some of us have been doing so for 15 years,” Jukskei Park Runners member Riaan Barnard explains. “There’s a wide range of abilities over the 5-K, from 17 minutes to 25 minutes.”

Barnard took Baddeley’s time, divided it by 5km and realised none of his friends would be able to sustain that pace for longer than a couple of hundred metres. And given Bryanston is not the most even of parkruns, he divided the downhill stretches into 300m sections and the uphill stretches were divided into 200m sections. The team of 14 ran 19 legs, some of whom ran two of them.

To prove it actually happened, the Jukskei Park Runners attached a GPS watch to the baton passed between each runner.

“I think we were all as nervous as we would have been at the start of the Comrades,” Barnard admits. “There was the thought of not letting each other down, and the thrill we might beat the world record – even as a relay team – because no-one believed we could do it. We proved it was possible for the average runner who can’t achieve any of those times on their own.”

It was a team effort in more ways than one: the rest of the Jukskei Park Runners either supported on the sidelines, filmed the runners’ attempt or acted as time keepers.

Jukskei Park Runners have discussed beating the 5-K world record on the track, which is one minute faster than their combined parkrun time at Bryanston. And provided they can recruit enough runners, it’s possible they’ll attempt the 10-K and half-marathon world records in the future.

The MiWay Wally Hayward Marathon is a road-running race, marathon, half marathon and fun run in Gauteng, covering 42.2km, 21.1km, 10km, 4.9km and 1km, on 1 May 2020.

Wally Hayward’s exceptional running career spanned six decades, and although he represented South Africa at the Olympic Games and set numerous ultra-distance world records, he is best remembered for his remarkable achievements in the Comrades Marathon, which he won five times and completed successfully at the ages of 79 and 80.

Probably the most remarkable achievement of the great Wally Hayward was finishing the 1988 Comrades Marathon, just before his 80th birthday. Wally stunned the world by finishing in a time of 9:44.1, beating more than half the field. In 1989, just a few weeks short of his 81st birthday, he completed his last Comrades just before the cut-off, in 10:58.03, in front of a rapturous crowd to become the oldest finisher in Comrades history.

He died on 28 April 2006, at the age of 97, a couple of days before the Wally Hayward Marathon that year, held, as always, on the Workers’ Day public holiday, on 1 May.
