Gear Editor, Ryan Scott, joined over 20 000 runners in the streets of Soweto to celebrate the history, the people and the vibe at ‘The People’s Race’.
Unless you have already got one under your belt, who knows what to expect from the Old Mutual Soweto Marathon. Right away though, at an energised registration in The Calabash (Soccer city) with so many eager runner’s enjoying an impressive expo, I was psyched to line up on the start line.
To settle some of my own nervous energy, I signed up for highly sought after, Nike+ NRC stretch and warm up gig. Just gentle enough to open up some of the joints, gently massage my ITB, and do some calm breathing to make sure my body and mind were ready for the early 6am Sunday morning start.
Race day started for me at 4am, to deal with the traffic melee, and to make sure I arrived at the stadium in time for the 6am start. The vibe at the start is brilliant. Warm weather, singing, and dancing created a perfect beginning to what unfolded as a fantastic run.
