Running Shoe Review: Newton Gravitas

Print page

By Ryan Scott

Newton manufactures shoes only in this genre and is very much on the money when it comes to performance.

We tested the neutral performance trainer, the Gravitas=Gravity.

The shoe not only comes in at a really light and racy 266g due to the lack of technology for support and less cushioning than normal, but also gives back some of the energy that you pound through the midsole. This is achieved with Newton’s Action/Reaction Technology which aims to maximise efficiency. Notice the small ‘KitKat’-style bars on the midsole? Eachone has a cavity below it, and once you get your stride right to strike closer to your centre of gravity, the rebound gives you an extra helping of spring in your step.

Editor Mike Finch tweeted this after a run in his test pair: ‘Another great run in my #Newtons. Almost feels like an illegal aid’.

The new feel does take some getting used to and is best experienced with an open mind, but we think the benefits can be enjoyed by most.

Newton Gravitas at a glance:

  • More efficient ride with energy return
  • Less impact due to natural running set-up and forefoot strike
  • Highly breathable and fast-drying airy mesh upper (not great in heavy rain and puddles)
  • 100% recycled material for laces, outersole rubber and box and packaging
  • Lightweight racer favoured by many top Ironman athletes

Zola Budd Pieterse has taken on the agency for Newton Running in South Africa and can be seen at expos countrywide explaining the benefits of a product she clearly backs. One of the original barefoot running stars, Zola got our editor Mike Finch to try a pair, and he is almost certain his Achilles injury is now a thing of the past thanks to the Newtons.

i recently had the opportunity to speak to Zola at one of her workshops (14 Jan 12) and she naturally proposed the Newton Gravity, i purchased it & i’m still in the testing phase, hope it assists with an improved stride.
