Survive The Rain: Running Jackets

1 – Puma Lightweight Graphic Jacket R1199

The Puma USP WIND system used with this jacket is suited to blustery conditions. The airflow vents, from the upper back to under the arms, help regulate air movement, while elasticised stretch cuffs are comfortably adjusted to keep the sleeves firmly in place. The curved extension on the lower back is suited to body movements.

2 – Nike R1195

A jacket with two layers, which makes it a little heavier, but the best choice if you were to start a race in the steady rain. The outer layer is thin as silk and will resist light rain, and the under layer has a waxy surface for heavier drops. Welded seams seal the water out, and a pack-away hoody on the collar folds away when not needed.

3 – Capestorm Helium 2.0 R499

A featherweight in the jacket category, which is just what is needed on the start line with light rain in the air. Folds down to the size of an energy bar and weighs just 85g. The build-up of body moisture inside the jacket is dealt with by VO2 Max breathable fabric, which is constructed using super-fine microfibres with a hi-density weave to block the wind.

4 – Nike Cyclone Vapor Jacket R1299

Immediately noticeable is the internal flocking (textured dots), to create airspace and help reduce cling. The Cyclone is not really suited to its name, but will resist light wind and rain. An adjustable hood will help more than you expect with warmth, without hampering visibility; and the elastic cord with toggle – plus flattering, streamlined fit – adds to the comfort. Packs away to a pocket on the lower back.

5 – Fusion Packable Pink R379

The fabric is soft and light, but this jacket is less water-resistance-treated than the others, so is best used to fight the nippy cold, but not the wind and rain. There is an adjustable elastic toggle on the waist and elastic on the cuffs. Reflector patterns are placed on the hips and high up on the back of the neck, which makes you highly visible to traffic behind you.

6 – First Ascent Apple Jacket R350

Even lighter than the original Apple jacket (named not only for the colour, but because it packs into a pouch the size of an apple) from First Ascent, the new version weighs just 95grams and includes improved breathability, from laser cut vents on the underarm. The Microtex fabric is windproof and water-resistant.

I love my Capestorm Helium jacket. Keeps the wind and slight rain out but light enough to tie around your waist when u heat up. The heat build-up inside is just enough to keep you warm on winter runs even while wearing a short sleeve T.

I got a Cape Storm helium as a gift – great jacket! But when you see the prices of these products you got to ask yourself “who is getting rich here?!”
    85g @ R499 = R5870 / Kg – This is seriously expensive material by anyone’s standards.

I have to agree with you on that sean. Lot of these gear are over priced.
