Is A Daily Treat OK?

Q: I eat healthy, balanced meals and exercise regularly… does it matter if I treat myself to a biscuit or cupcake a day?

Dr. Liz Applegate answers:

A 1 250kJ cupcake contains lots of sugar and not many nutrients. But since you run and eat right, a daily indulgence is no problem.

But, make sure though, that your ‘healthy’ diet really is just that.

Every day you should eat three cups of vegetables, three pieces of fruit, six servings of whole grains, two to three servings of dairy, 170 to 230g protein, and a bit of healthy fat.

Keep a food journal to record everything you eat and drink every day. Review it at the end to see what you’re really eating, you might be surprised at how many extra little treats you’re nibbling on here and there! Find out how to keep a food diary, here.

How can she make a blanket statement like that, everyone’s nutritional needs are different. And junk food is junk food. I doubt a health professional would advise its okay to smoke sometimes.
