The Best Post-Race Drink

Chocolate milk protects muscles!

Yes … you read correctly!

Researchers at the University of Conneticut had men run for 45 minutes and then drink 500ml of either fat-free chocolate milk or a carb-recovery beverage with the same number of kilojoules.

Three hours later, the dairy drinkers had lower markers of muscle protein breakdown, suggesting the protein in milk provides a recovery advantage over carb-only beverages.

Consume it! To speed recovery, have a glass of low-fat or fat-free chocolate milk after runs longer than 45 minutes.

Good news for South Africans that like their lekker local flavours… with 1.5g of fat per 100ml, Steri Stumpie falls in the low fat category. Cheers!

I don;t like chocolate milk, does the other flavours do the same or why is only chocolate milk mentioned always everywhere?

I have been wondering the same thing as the person above. Is there something with the chocolate – or is it just the milk – and any flavour will do? Milk without flavouring? is that also good?

    From another article:
“…the advantage of chocolate milk over other sports drinks or even regular milk is that it has a “golden ratio” of four times the carbohydrates for every gram of protein.”

I’m assuming the sugar in the chocolate milk powder boosts the ratio of carbohydrates to protein for it to attain a 4 / 1 ratio.

The protein aids in muscle repair and the carbohydrates replenishes glycogen stores. I assume regular milk will still be beneficial as it contains protein, but won’t be as effective as chocolate milk in restoring glycogen stores.
