South African ultra trail runner Ryan Sandes has done it again: he finished 2nd in the 2012 Western States 100miler, that took place on Saturday, 23 June. Ryan finished in a time of 15:03:56.
The winner, Timothy Olsen from the USA, was first in a time of 14:46:44. Both the first and second place times beat the existing course record.
Comment from Ryan:
“I just finished the Western States 100miler…..I am shattered but at the same time super chuffed. I finished 2nd to Timothy Olsen who ran the fastest time ever (mine was the 2nd fastest ever set on the course). We started off in freezing cold conditions and ran in a combination of rain and hail before the temperatures rose into the high 30’s. It was an insane day out and one crazy adventure. I felt really good all day and feel I ran one of my strongest races ever. The course really suited my style of running so I guess I will be back next year Thanks so much to everyone for your support. It’s always such a proud moment to raise the South African flag through the finish line. Off to Vegas now for a few days rest”
In addition to a tough men’s race, Ellie Greenwood beat the 18 year old women’s course record by nearly an hour, with a new record time of 16:47:19. Greenwood finished second in the Comrades Marathon just 3 weeks before.
The WS100 is one of the oldest ultra trail events in the world, and considered one of the most challenging trail events.

Your such an inspiration in my life and in my running. Trailing is Life. Well done.
