Two days of the finest, unadulterated mountain running on the planet. Conveniently situated between Johannesburg, Durban and Bloemfontein in the magnificent Northern Drakensberg mountains, and five years old this year, Runtheberg has established itself as South Africa’s premier 2-day stage trail-running event.

There is something for everyone. The Runtheberg Challenge offers a little over 15km per day of glorious, sometimes technical, always runnable, single-track running, with enough vertical ascent to make sure that, come Monday, runners know they took part in a ‘mountain race’.

The Runtheberg Extreme offers more of this, but with over 2km of elevation. One of the highlights is the incomparable, 5km mountain-top stretch, at above 2000m, on Day One.

It’s understandable why this is on every trailrunner’s bucket list. Unforgettable features include: running through the pre-historic Fern Forest, mountain rainforest, running between the heights of the magnificent Drakensberg Aphitheatre and famous Mont-Aux-Sources on one side and the depths of the Montusi Valley on the other, summiting the dramatic free-standing Montusi Peak, and running through the legendary Tugela River, just below its source.

Pre-entries close on 23 September, or when the maximum number of entries has been reached.
