This is a fairly demanding race through several of the hilly suburbs of Randburg. The start in Republic Road is downhill, but after that there is a gradual 3km climb to the first water station. Between there and the next water station at 7km, it is mostly downhill, with one or two climbs in-between. The next kilometre comprises a long steep climb up Maria Road, but this section of the route is lit up on both sides with candles, in keeping with the Valentine’s Day theme. At the summit, a bagpiper signals the end of the long slog up the hill. After the 8km mark, the route flattens out, and the run back to the floodlit Sports Complex is pleasant running.
There are spot prizes and giveaways, and a post-race party and cash bar.
Unique fact: mugs are awarded to all finishers. Dress up in a Valentine’s theme.
