Entries are open for the Landmarks Half Marathon, which takes place on Sunday 6 November and celebrates its ten year anniversary. Participants running their tenth half marathon will receive their permanent numbers to celebrate this milestone.
A popular event with Capetonians, the 21.1km route offers a challenging and scenic route past key landmarks in the Southern Suburbs. The route incorporates some of the many heritage sites, world-class sporting facilities and tranquil open spaces within the surrounds of host club Western Province Cricket Club Running Section, where the race starts and finishes.
Some of the landmarks include the Rondebosch Common, Mostert’s Mill, University of Cape Town, Rhodes Memorial, Newlands Forest, Josephine Mill, Newlands Brewery, Newlands Rugby Stadium and Sahara Park Newlands.
The event also offers participants the MySchool Move for Your Health 6km Fun Walk/Run incorporating the ADT/Woolworths School Challenge. This fun run/walk is organised by WPCC Running Section and the Sports Science Institute of South Africa and promotes the World Health Organisation’s global “Move for your Health” campaign. Participants of all ages are encouraged to take part in what promises to be a fun filled day for the whole family.
Watch the community newspapers for a six week training programme and useful advice to prepare you for the 6km event, which all forms part of the campaign to encourage people to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.
The 6km fun run/walk starts at 06h45 and is aimed at encouraging school children to be active and get outdoors. Cut off for the fun run/walk is 09h00. There is great prize money up for grabs in the School Challenge, compliments of MySchool, Woolworths and ADT, where the schools with the highest percentage of learners participating in relation to the total number of learners in the school, will be rewarded. This event provides an ideal opportunity for schools to get active, have fun and win great prizes.
Participants can enter at www.topevents.co.za or pick up an entry form at any Sportsmans Warehouse or New Balance outlet store. Pre-race entries close on Sunday 30 October but late entries will be taken on race day at Western Province Cricket Club from 05h00 onwards. For entry enquiries, participants can contact Top Events on 021-511 7130 and email info@topevents.co.za. The half marathon starts at 06h00 and the cut off is at 09h15.
The event will also incorporate the “Running with Teddies Campaign” and all participants are asked to bring children’s toys and games with them on race day and drop it off on route outside the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, the event’s official charity.
Prize money has been increased to a total of R25 000, plus there is a R5 000 incentive for the male or female who break the course records set by Neo Molema (1:06:59) in 2004 and Bulelwa Mtshagi (1:19:49) in 2002. New Balance will also be giving a pair of shoes to the value of R1 000 to first man and woman to cross the finish line having completed the entire race in their brand of shoe.
Hammer Nutrition will also be awarding the King and Queen of the Mountain for the first man and woman who reaches the turn-around point at Rhodes Memorial and who then finish in the top ten of the men and women’s categories.
