The annual Randburg Harriers Valentine’s Night race is one filled with excitement and creativity with an extremely diverse field. Many “serious” walkers and runners head out for a challenge of the hills in Randburg – starting out with a steep 3km uphill, a short reprieve until 7km and then a consistent up until the end of the 10km route. There is also a large contingency of entrants who dress up and make it a fun evening out – from cupids to angels, devils and men dressed in tights. All qualifying for the well-sponsored spot prizes and best dressed theme.
The race starts in Republic Road and participants endure an undulating course through Moret, Ruiterhof, Robindale, RobinHills, Jacanlee and Randpark Extension. After a short downhill at 6 kilometers, the race turned right into a candlelit Maria Street – a slow, but painful uphill which many feel the effects of a day later. The final kilometre around the Randburg Sports Complex leaves many breathless but pleased to complete this challenging race. Finishers receive their own KFC/Randburg Harriers race mug – a reminder of the effort they put in!
The Love Theme party at Randburg Harriers clubhouse is also an attraction with live entertainment and more exercise available on the dance floor.
A portion of the proceeds from this race is donated to Randburg Harriers’ charities – Anne Harding Cheshire Home and Wiggles and Squiggles. Because Rundays are Fundays!
