Description
Marathon:
Starting at the Coetzenberg Athletics Track, the route follows the Suidwal to Piet Retief, right into Piet Retief, then left into Dorp Street. Runner’s will join the old route at the R44/Dorp Street intersection, then head out on the M12/R310, towards Kuilsriver. Turn left onto R312, past Spier. The first 12km is flat. Runner’s now turn left into the Annandale Road – this undulating section takes you to the R44 and the 17km mark. Turn right into the R44 and follow this section to Somerset West. Turn around on the Somerset West Bridge and head back to Stellenbosch, along the R44. From 38km, this is an easy run home, finishing at the Coetzenburg Athletics Stadium.
Half Marathon:
Starting at the Coetzenberg Athletics Track, the route follows the Suidwal to Piet Retief, right into Piet Retief, then left into Dorp Street. Turn left into the R44, towards Somerset West. At the 9km mark, turn left into Blaauwklippen Road. The next 3km is gravel and slightly uphill. Getting back on the tar at around 14km, there is a short, steep downhill and winding section, before the course levels out. This section takes runners back to the R44, which they join at around 17km. From here, it is an easy run, back to the Coetzenburg Athletics Stadium.
The first 10 runners, the first five women and veteran men, the first three veteran women and master men, as well as the winning Master Lady and first Grand Master all win cash prizes. The category winners also receive gold medals. All those who finish in less than 03:15 win silver medals. All finishers who make the cut-off time win bronze. There are also incentive prizes for men finishing in less than 02:21, for women finishing in less than 02:45, and for veterans finishing in less than 02:32. If you complete 10 runs you get a permanent number. The “Wingerdstompietrofee” is awarded to those who have completed 15 successful Winelands. A double laurel permanent number goes to those who complete 20 runs. All finishers in the half marathon win medals. T-shirts can be ordered separately with early entries.

Great route, great marshalling, wonderful ice cold water and coke (it was a bit hot) and we will definitely be back next year :-)
The Winelands marathon is really well organised and enjoyable run with great views on most of the course. Probably not PB material, but very flat for the first 15km or so and then rolling hills to the finish. The only dissapointment was the +20km running on the hard shoulder of the R44 with cars, trucks and bicycles flying past.
