This was a well organised event which probably suffered in numbers due to another race in Johannesburg on the same day. I’m glad I chose this race. It is quite refreshing to run a “half” these days which isn’t a double lapper. The half marathon had a nice variety of flats, ups and downs. The entrance fee was very affordable and it was a pleasant surprise receiving a t-shirt I wasn’t expecting:). I’ll always run Callies races for the finish in Germiston Stadium on the tartan track, quite a treat! Well done Germiston Callies!

I arrived home from an overseas holiday at 22:00 on the night before the race and I could have used all kinds of excuses not to run this race. I was on the starting line at 07:00, however, and I’m glad I made the effort. It was an unusually small field but the race was well organised and one couldn’t find fault with anything. Despite my extra holiday kilos and my general lack of sleep I managed to match my best half marathon time of the year on a course which had its fair share of hills. There are quite a few races run at this venue over the year and after years of Germiston races I still can’t get used to that long, final, boring stretch next to the railway line as you get close to the stadium. Nevertheless it was good to run a one-lap 21km race that was flawless in every respect and I’m glad I got out of bed and put my running shoes on for this one. Now excuse me while I zzzzzzzzz.

I have been out of action for some time now, beset with injuries but decided that this race would be the start of my comeback. I only ran the 10k, but it was great. A good course, with great refreshment stations. The marshalls were excellent as well. Well done Callies on a fantastic and superbly well organised event.
