Ryan Sandes in Nepal: Day 1

It was a crazy journey getting to the race registration in Pokhara. My flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara was cancelled so I had to get a ride in a taxi. This ‘taxi’ would have would have given our local ‘cockroach’ taxi’s a run for their money….200km in 6.5hours later we arrived in Pokhara. I thought my life over a few times… the procedure for over taking here is just hoot and go even on a blind corner.

So I made it to the start line this morning, luckily no stomach bug like a number of other competitors. I was feeling super relaxed and looking forward to a very beautiful few hours of running… which it was. The views were crazy… massive white capped mountains going into the sky. Running through the local villages was the highlight of the day for me…..the people are so friendly and welcoming! I had to dodge a few cows and jump over one or two chickens and even got stopped to be given a local ‘flower necklace’.

Race wise the day went well and I ran within myself as there are a few big climbs to come in the next few stages. A number of competitors got lost, but luckily this did not affect me too badly. My time was 3:08 so I have quite a nice lead going into day 2 but it is still early days.

Thanks for all the messages of support guys!! Off to eat a freeze dried meal now…

Keep you posted
Ryan
