Even if your colleagues consider themselves “non-runners”, drag them out for a team run. It’s a great way to encourage social interaction and to get to know your colleagues in an un-threatening, fun and healthy environment.
On Thursday last week, Runner’s World hosted a 5km fun run for our publishing house, Touchline Media. A few people grumbled that “they don’t run”, so we encouraged them to come along and walk the route. This was not a race, but rather a fun outing for everyone. Friends and families were invited too. We had quite a large turnout which gathered on the Sea Point promenade amidst windy conditions.
A few took the even seriously and sprinted off at the gun (aka the dropped scarf), but the majority just ambled along, chatting to one another and enjoying the afternoon’s activity. We were encouraged to dress up, adding to the festivities and breaking down of barriers. It’s hard to keep office boundaries when you are wearing leg warmers and fishnet stockings!
St Elmos provided free pizza at the finish and LOADED were there with their new product, healthy and delicious smoothies. We also had a few prizes for the best dressed, a spirit award and so on.
But prize giving and free food aside, encourage your work mates to join you on a run. Leave the office politics and frustrations behind, and just get to know one another whilst sweating it out in the great outdoors. You will be amazed at the increased productivity!
Take a look at some of the pictures from our Fun Run. And send us yours too!
