Running And Cell Phones

Is your cell phone a necessary piece of running equipment? We asked recreational runners and a professional coach to weigh in:

Yes! “Carrying a cell phone is a simple safety measure. You could be hit by a car; you could twist an ankle. Why not have a way to call for help in case you need it?” – Craig Guillot

No! “Running is my time to focus on me by improving my body and clearing my mind. That time is precious, so no beeping or buzzing electronics allowed.” – Jen DeDecker

Expert take

“If it is for safety reasons, that’s fine. If it’s for social or business reasons, then it better be something like your wife’s in labour, or you’re going to get fired if a contract won’t go through because you didn’t pick up. Otherwise, you’re better off leaving it at home.” – Ben Greenfield, exercise physiologist and coach

In South Africa it’s better to leave it at home in case you get mugged, or run with an old phone.

I run with my phone because of music, it helps me focus.

You are better of with your cell phone I believe. No need to chat on it or let it disturb your run. But in-case of a emergency you will need it…

I use Endomondo, which is a free gps tracking app on my blackbery. All my runs are logged with time, distance, speed etc. So my phone is with me in a discreet pouch when I run and is also there for emergencys.

I run with my phone mainly because I use a GPS tracking application to keep me advised on my pace and to have the run automatically logged. Having it double as an extra safety precaution is a bonus.
